Tea
Bubble tea
originated in Taiwan in the early 1980’s and is now
as much of the Asia culture as Starbucks is to America. Bubble
tea shops now number in the thousands. Bubble tea beverages
can be found in cities on both coasts of the United States,
in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and elsewhere.
They are made from cassava after the root is peeled and grated,
and the juice extracted. This is a complex process that yields
a tapioca flour later compressed into brown or white cakes.
When round, they are known as tapioca pearls, and once boiled,
can be found lurking in sweet drinks. The drinks come in about
20 to 30 different flavors, from every fruit imaginable to
plain milk tea. The basis for the drink is a concentrate of
high quality black tea, green tea, or Thai tea. mixed with
milk, sugar and of course tapioca pearls or coconut jelly.
Its popularity has grown increasingly because of its great
taste and Americas need for a fresh new fun-to-drink alternative
to coffee.
